Why Miracles Cannot Produce Faith
There are some great foundational principles found here in these verses. First, miracles do not … and cannot … produce real faith and solid believers. They couldn’t do so in Jesus day, nor can they do so in our day. There is only one thing that produces real faith and rock solid believers and that is ... the Word of God. As you have in Rom 10:17,
So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Jesus knew how shallow the belief was that these people were exhibiting when they got so excited about his miracles and “believed in his name.” He knew they were “fair weather” believers … emotional and curious followers ... produced by the excitement of the moment but, when bad times came, they would turn on him and fall away.
That brings up the second principle found here. It is the axiomatic truth that the nature of man is one of complete spiritual blindness and depravity. Jesus was fully aware this was the case with every soul present in the enthusiastic crowd that day. Therefore, “he did not commit himself to them, because he knew all men... for, it says, he knew what was in man.”
So … what are men like, anyway? What ... is... in man? Romans 3:10-18 answers this question for us,
As it is written:
“There is none righteous, no, not one;
There is none who understands;
There is none who seeks after God.
They have all turned aside;
They have together become unprofitable;
There is none who does good, no, not one.”
“Their throat is an open tomb;
With their tongues they have practiced deceit”;
“The poison of asps is under their lips”;
“Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.”
“Their feet are swift to shed blood;
Destruction and misery are in their ways;
And the way of peace they have not known.”
“There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
When it came to understanding the nature of men, Jesus knew all about that. His understanding was far beyond mere theological knowledge. He knew man from the perspective of perfect and absolute knowledge, you see. As you have it in Hebrews 4:13,
And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.
