good for what
“Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out.

If we lose who we are in God, we aren't even good enough to be thrown into manure! Now, not to say we are pond scum or anything, God loves us and cares deeply for us. He'll always be perusing us. This just tells us what we are good for, NOT how much He loves us. I think this ties in with the shepherd and his sheep, although sort of the inverse.
