Proper Understanding - Not Heaven but the Holy Ghost
Too many times this passage is taken out of context and misunderstood as a reference to immortal heaven.
Jesus begin the ministry of the Holy Ghost at the end of chapter 13 and continues into chapter 15.
When properly studied, the true understanding is found to be a reference to the Holy Ghost. The Fathers house was left desolate and the new dwelling place for God the Father and Christ was "God with us" in the form of the Holy Ghost as the Comforter dwelling inside our souls.
Jesus explains that "It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you". This is the place Jesus went to prepare.
If He went to prepare immortal heaven, then were have all of God's people been waiting since Adam? You would have to go against the teaching of the scriptures to dream up a place, which sadly, some have done just that.
1Ki 6:5 And against the wall of the house he built chambers round about, against the walls of the house round about, both of the temple and of the oracle: and he made chambers round about:
Joh 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
Joh 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
Joh 14:20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.
Joh 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
