Symboligy - Sun, Moon, Stars
Just as Joesph in describing his dream, we must also properly interpret the use of these words and not take them literally in prophecy.
Ge 37:9 And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.
This are also used else where in scripture to describe events which took place during Old Testament times. Again, they never literally occurred.
Isa 13:10 For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.
Isa 24:23 Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the LORD of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously.
Eze 32:7 And when I shall put thee out, I will cover the heaven, and make the stars thereof dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give her light.
As in Joesphs dream, these represent authorities and powers that would be darkened.
