Matt Chandler: Church + Culture
Matthew 5:10-12 ESV
"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you."
Matthew 5:13-16 ESV
"You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet. "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven."
You are never going to be able to present Jesus in a way that everyone will enjoy. If you do you have presented a false account if Jesus & the gospel. They will not like our message but we must tell them!!!
The world will paint us to be persecutors. We should rather be like sheep among wolves.
Culture is what is considered in arts as excellent. Being salt in the world is being a disciple of Jesus Christ and maturing in their relationship with Christ. A lot of churches claim to love Jesus but don't pursue transformation. Many know about Jesus but they don't KNOW him.
FIVE REASONS WE DONT SEE TRANSFORMATION
1) Overemphasis on width but not depth. We seek knowledge on many different topics but not seeking how to apply it.
2) We don't do community well. We do not take encouragement or rebuke well. WE MUST BE WILLING TO EXPOSE THE NASTINESS WITHIN US. Our culture does not like dealing with hard things like exposing our weaknesses.
3) Lack of submission to authority.
Go to church in multiple places but do not belong to one church. We will never find a perfect church. We are hypocrites but God keeps filling us with grace and mercy. When we joyfully submit God protects us. Authority over us helps us get through life. This generation dislikes authority.
4) Overemphasis on light
We are after creating disciples that shall follow christ's commandments. Word of God should be central always.
5) We live in a culture of speed
We dread the slow uphill crawl off sanctification. Growth occurs veryslowly. Sanctification is slow to feel bus easy to measure. "Jesus Christ will get us home even if we will get a little banged up in the process. We were never promised to get anywhere quickly.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE LOSE OUR SALTINESS
We become worthless. Light is not just evangelism. We havebeen given unique gifts to evangelize with. This culture will continie to get worse and worse. We must resist the urge to look cool. When we seek to look cool instead of serving God's kingdom we rob ourselves of sanctification and others of salvation. God merely needs us to proclaim truth boldly.
Where are we in rebellion against God's revealed will for us? There are sins by ommission and sins by commission. If we are not walking in obedience we claim to be our own Gods.
