an understanding God
You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. (Exodus 20:5, 6 NIV)
This used to always confuse me, the part "punishing the children to the third and fourth generation" but you have to read that in context with the next verse. "... Showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments."
God won't hold a grudge against you if your parents or grandparents did evil, and you follow Him. God is a gracious God who wants to see reconciliation rather than condemnation.
