Tony Carter: The Way of Love; 1 Corinthians 13
1 Corinthians 13 (mainly 8-13)
Water mark on dollar bills analogy.
Love authenticates our Christianity; love is our watermark.
Love is our single greatest attribute.
To the Christian love should be like air.
Agape love is love we are called to; it is the love of God in Christ. It is love expressed in, by, and through Jesus. 2 Corinthians 5:14. Love that declares Jesus is lord. Corinthians were fascinated by the seemingly extraordinary. They viewed gifts of spirit as status symbols, to be used for self-edification. Gifts of spirit should be focused on gift-giver. Without love, we have no Christian life. WHATS'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT??? EVERYTHING!!!
1 Corinthians 1-3
Without love all other calls to Christianity mean nothing!!! Without love gifts of the spirit are meaningless.
Love has three attributes: Eternal, universal, incomparable
When the perfect comes all else shall pass. Matthew 5:48. Romans 8:29. Ephesians 5:27. These gifts arre partial and belong to the age of immaturity. CHRISTIANITY IS ABOUT LOVING PEOPLE WITH TONGUES WE HAVE ACCORDING TO KNOWLEDGE GIVEN TO US. Not all have been given gifts but all can love. Philippians 2:20.
As we grow in Christ we learn what is most important. We learn what it truly means to be a Christian. Love is always applicable, it may be tough but it must be done. There is NEVER a situation where love is not the right thing! Love fits any situation!
Love is in it's own category above the rest. The only two listed with them are faith & hope, but love is still greater. Faith & hope are still very important but ultimately they show the incomparableness of love. Faith leads to hope. Love has its greatest work in eternity. Faith & hope have its greatest benefits now. Marriage example. Once you get married faith & hope are replaced by love.
Love is war, love is difficult, to love with God's love is to fight this world. It is to go to war with the devil. Our greatest enemy comes from our own flesh and to go to war with self is to fight all our inherently born desires. The reason love is possible is b/c of Christ. When Christ came into world, that was God sending love like boots on the ground. With boots on the ground it will be hard. Persecution will come, but others need to know of this love. Liike Jesus went into world with boots on the ground we must follow and do as well. B/c Jesus loved we must keep these boots on.
