The promise of relationship
God has given the instruction that the children of Israel are to obey Him only.
This sounds restrictive, but the Egyptians mentioned here serve gods and their priests. The Canaanites mentioned here serve gods and their priests.
Everybody cries freedom against the restrictions of religion, but everybody serves something, lives by something and the rules associated with that something.
The difference here though isn't just a list of threats but the promise of relationship. God is doing ask this and setting out the laws, not to make them jump through hoopsand not for the lulz, but because He has this ultimate goal of them (us, eventually) living with Him and Him with us.
