Proverbs 21:23 ESV Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble.
Keeping your tongue and your mouth. It is yours and no one else's. It is my responsible for what words I speak.
Out of trouble!! I'm all for that.
Ecclesiastes 3:7 ESV .....a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
I never consciously think, "this is a good time to be silent". I almost always speak when I am in a secure environment and thoughts come to mind. Insecure environment??? My mouth is shut baby! Until and unless I am provoked enough to retaliate.
1 Peter 3:10 ESV For “Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit;
This tells me you can't see good days or love life if you lie or speak evil. Who doesn't want good days or to love life?
Proverbs 12:18 ESV There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.
I am so rash in a lot that I do, including my words. Sword thrusts? I don't want to do that to people. I want to bring healing. Not me but the wisdom I gain from God's Word.
Matthew 12:36-37 ESV I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
"Every careless word" OUCH! God, help me to be aware when my words are careless and like sword thrusts. Justified by my words?? I can totally see condemned by my words.
Proverbs 29:20 ESV Do you see a man who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him.
There is that rashness again. More hope for a fool? OUCH
Proverbs 15:4 ESV A gentletongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.
Similar to sword thrusts/healing. I don't want to break peoples' spirits.
Proverbs 10:19 ESV When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.
Hmmmm I know I often speak just to be heard & acknowledged.
I wanted to study the tongue in terms of relating/reacting to Gerry. But I see much more in how I speak/don't speak to others as well.
All of Jesus' words were measured & purposeful but also came from his heart. He didn't have to think about what he was saying in terms of truth or not. He always spoke the truth. it's amazing to think that Jesus was tempted to lie.
Hebrews 4:15 NKJV For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Had to search for it but this Scripture just came to mind.
Ephesians 4:29 NKJV Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.
NIV says only what is helpful for building others up ACCORDING TO THEIR NEEDS, THAT IT MAY BENEFIT THOSE WHO LISTEN.
Not necessarily what I want to say but only what is beneficial, according to needs, graceful.
This brings to mind
Hebrews 10:24 NKJV
And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works,
CONSIDER.... I need to give much more consideration to my words ALL THE TIME.
