Free to Love.
This is a liberation passage of great energy and affirmation. We are free! Let us live as truly free men and women! How does that play out in a world of corruption and slavery to sin? We are no longer slaves to sin, and so we should look and act differently than the slaves we once were, and the slaves who remain around us.
Here is what freedom looks like: a sweet generosity of spirit, and a genuine care for the welfare of others enters into our characters. We gradually shift from "all about me" to "all about God." God is all about creative, ever flowing love, and so that Spirit of God living in us causes us to be also more loving with each passing day, month, and year.
This transformation of character is a process of time and grace. Change is "gradual" Paul states. You make progress under the operation of the Spirit with the cooperation of your will. Day by day. You don't become someone other than yourself. You simply become the someone God always envisioned you to be when he created you uniquely.
