Sickness and sinning analogically linked
In the same way that sickness stops a person from functioning properly, causes great pain and debilitation and is something that requires healing, so sin likewise stops a person from functioning properly, causes great pain and debilitation and is something that requires healing.
Jesus compares himself to a physician amongst his patients who is able to heal the sick of their physical as well as spiritual maladies. The righteous, the healthy do not need to see a doctor since they are not suffering the effects of sickness and sin--or so they think. In this instance, Jesus in fact upends the view of the so called righteous since they were like healthy people who shunned the sick for fear of being infected instead of being healthy people who helped to heal the sick. He makes it clear, that he is not like them nor is he calling them, but rather he is working among sick sinners to heal them and call them into God's kingdom.
Consider your life--have you been forgiven by Christ? Are you now separating yourself from the spiritually sick in fear of being infected by them? Or having been healed of the spiritual malady of sin, are you now calling sinners to the physician who healed you?
