"All for one, one for all."
Three musketeers motto and mission of loyalty to each other.
Philippians 2:1-4 ESV
So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
Struggles outside have a tendency to pull churches apart. Struggles within the church have the same impact.
Paul is appealing to our Christian experience.
"Since these things are true, let me tell you about unity."
"He constantly appeals to the privileges of grace before bringing it to the obedience of faith."
If there is any encouragement in Jesus, which there is!!!
Being in Christ is the source of all our blessings, therefore there is encouragement.
Is there any encouragement in reconciliation, our justification, sin being removed from us, our adoption, the presence of the holy spirit, he is our saviour (past & present), he is our shepherd, he sympathizes with our weaknesses, our friend, our brother, our sovereign king?
Our adoption is the "Apex of grace."
Comfort from love: A fatherly love. We desperately need this as sinners, & sufferers. This comfort is found in God's personal intimate love.
Does this love comfort me daily?
Bush's love for us is not based on feeling, but is truly constant & never-changing. Our affections need to be informed by the truth of the cross. GOOD LIVES ME BECAUSE OF THE CROSS OF HIS SON AND I AM COMFORTED BY THIS TRUTH.
Participation in the spirit: We are never alone, because the spirit is with us and unites all of us. We can tangibly know God's love through interaction with another.
These things mentioned in chapter 2 belong to us through the gospel. If these seem missing in our life, where is the disconnect?
What lies have I believed?
What truths have I failed to believe?
Privileges of grace comes before obedience of faith.
Disunity defames the gospel.
Be of the same mind:
Having the same love:
Being in full accord and of one mind: Paul is talking about unity in their love for one another focused on Jesus' glory.
Nothing out of rivalry or conceit: Churches should stand through trials, and by doing so they proclaim the gospel in action.
Conceit: Thinking I'm more worthy. Only one agenda is first: Make much of Jesus
Count others more significant than yourselves: Be humble!!! Don't make judgments about others worthiness. Don't compare yourself to others but say everyone is better than you. Humility is the absence of pride.
Personal right: I deserve
We must aim to serve others constantly. Our own interests should not trump the interests of others.
How can I contribute to summertime else's ministry that contributes to Christ's glory?
