There is something even deeper than the ahead of the gospel that Paul desires; the person of Christ.
Gospel spread = spread of Jesus Christ
Philippians 1:19-26 ESV
for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance, as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account. Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith, so that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus, because of my coming to you again.
1) WHAT PAUL WANTS MOST FOR HIMSELF
Paul find in the gospel living or dying are both filled with joy and soul satisfying.
Paul is waiting to see if he will be executed or not, when he appeals to Caesar.
HOW DOES PAUL HAVE THIS TRANSCENDING JOY?
To be in prison would be truly soul crushing, however Paul's greatest desire is Christ would be honored whether he lives or dies. He desires Jesus would be seen as great.
For Paul living or dying is secondary, and honoring Christ is primary.
Against all natural thinking and feeling, Paul is filled with joy. To live a joy filled life we must live for Christ.
What did Paul see in Jesus that he wanted to live and die for Jesus' honor? The answer to this changes everything!!!
Jesus' love for Paul was personal, and he realized this.
JESUS IS MORE THAN AN IDEA, JESUS IS A PERSON!!!!
Jesus' love changes everything. Paul is living for the day that all history is moving towards, recognizing Jesus as Lord.
Dying is gain because it's being with Jesus.
2) WHAT DOES GOD WANT FOR US?
How would I fill in the blanks in verse 21? If it is not Christ, it is wrong. Christ is so great, he is worth living & dying for.
JESUS LOVES ME AND GAVE HIMSELF FOR ME. THE GOSPEL IS GOOD NEWS BECAUSE IT IS ABOUT CHRIST? Do I really believe Jesus is alive, & everything is subject to him? If I'm living for something beside Jesus, why? Because I don't recognize him as alive. Paul didn't just know about Jesus, he knew Jesus.
