The Surpassing Worth of Knowing Christ
Jacked dude benching 515 lbs. This should put our strength in perspective. We have to be real with ourselves with where we're really at it. Examples like this encourage growth.
Philippians 3:4-11 ESV
though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.
Paul loves Jesus with ALL his heart.
1) PAUL WAS CONVINCED JESUS RIGHTEOUSNESS IS BETTER THAN ANY RIGHTEOUSNESS THAT COULD EVER BE EARNED
Paul's life used to be all about Jewish righteousness.
Paul was a Jewish "beast." By Jewish law, Paul was righteous. Paul did these things for zeal and passion. Paul meets Jesus, while persecuting the church. Paul turned away from the law, he had lived for for so long.
ARE WE CONVINCED JESUS' RIGHTEOUSNESS IS BETTER THAN ANY OTHER? DO WE BANK ON OUR OWN? OR CHRISTIAN WAY OF LIFE? OUR CHRISTIAN FAMILY? OR CHRISTIAN MUSIC?
We must be convinced our righteousness is found outside of ourselves.
2) PAUL WAS CONVINCED HE COULD HAVE A REAL RELATIONSHIP WITH CHRIST.
Linville gorge wanting and tasting water example. V. 10-11
Paul thirsts for an intimate relationship with Jesus.
Paul wants to know JESUS in a real way
EXPERIENCING THE POWER OF JESUS RESURRECTION
SUFFERING Knowing Christ involves sharing in his sufferings.
We want to enjoy Jesus, but don't want to suffer with him. Paul's relationship with Jesus grew when he suffered. Paul rejoiced in that Jesus suffered similarly. Without suffering we can not truly know Jesus.
BECOMING LIKE HIM IN HIS DEATH
Denying self and pursuing obedience. Obedience out of our relationship with Christ, not duty.
PAUL WAS CONVINCED KNOWING JESUS IS IMMENSELY BETTER THAN ANYTHING THIS WORLD HAS TO OFFER
Paul backs up what he says.
We often trade Jesus for garbage.
1 John 2:16 ESV
For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.
ARE WE CONVINCED KNOWING JESUS IS BETTER THAN ANYTHING?
HOW OFTEN DO I LET THINGS SURPASS JESUS?
WHAT GARBAGE AM I HOLDING ON TO IN MY LIFE?
As we die to self, Christ is with us!!!
At the end of the day, it's all about learning to love Jesus more and more. As time goes on we will remember in the midst of life what we see is seeking and knowing Christ.
