Jesus: Early Life- Joe Lechner
There is a big deal made of Jesus birth but not much is known of his first 30 years of life.
Luke 2:40-52 ESV
And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him. Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to custom. And when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, but supposing him to be in the group they went a day’s journey, but then they began to search for him among their relatives and acquaintances, and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, searching for him. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. And when his parents saw him, they were astonished. And his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress.” And he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” And they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them. And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.
By the second and third centuries fables were created about Jesus early life.
Was Jesus early sinlessness found annoying?
Typical of Jewish villages Jesus probably attended a house of the book where the rulers of the synagogue taught scriptures of the OT. At 12 you "graduate" into manhood. At this point they begin to become a devout Jew and follow the law. Then comes Luke 2.
Joseph and Mary were probably freaking out when they realized Jesus wasn't with them. It took then them three days to find him. Mary is clearly upset. The Bible only tells us what Mary says and what Jesus says. Jesus is not apologetic about it.
His parents are astonished he stayed behind.
He's astonished that they are looking for him, and don't understand his response. DO I?
Even at 12 Jesus is claiming that God is his father, his true father. Jesus shows who his true father is and that he is not distressed. The father Jesus refers to is God himself, and the house is the temple.
Jesus basically responds with the horse and father you are referring to are two completely different things.
All who heard Jesus AT 12 were amazed.
The curtain costs on Jesus' childhood. The next we read Jesus is 30.
Luke 4:16-21 ESV
And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
When Jesus returns to the Jerusalem synagogue, he reads Isaiah. Jesus is basically saying he is the person being spoken of in the scripture, and the time is now. WHOA!!!
The understanding was when the Messiah came it would usher in the coming of the kingdom. The poor referred to those in great need, spiritual, and the need for God. When messiah comes it is good news to the poor because he will be able to meet their needs.
The Jews of Jesus' day were poor because of their sin. Their spiritual slavery was them poor. THEY NEEDED A SPIRITUAL DELIVERANCE.
Throughout OT sight and blindness, might and dark described spiritual realities.
WHEN MESSIAH COMES, HE IS COMING AS A DELIVERER TO BRING DELIVERANCE FROM SPIRITUAL POVERTY, CAPTIVITY, OPPRESSION, BLINDNESS. JESUS IS SAYING HE IDS THE GREAT DELIVERER AND THE TIME IS NOW. ONLY THE SON OF GOD COULD ACCOMPLISH THESE THINGS.
AM I AWARE THAT ASSIST FROM JESUS I AM UTTERLY POOR?
There is a spiritual poverty that money cannot fix, only Jesus.
Our greatest need is to be made right with God. Apart from Jesus we're captives. Only Jesus gives us newness of life. Assist from Jesus I'm oppressed and dead, & following the devil, abd I'm completely ignorant of this fact. ONLY JESUS CAN RESCUE US FROM SPIRITUAL BLINDNESS. Jesus makes us rich in him.
