How generous is God to us?
Nicodemus is a Pharisee with a legitimate question, with much influence. He comes to Jesus in the night.
Jesus engages with Nicodemus if he is actually part of the kingdom.
These verses reference the OT.
Ezekiel- We need new Jesus
Numbers 21- God uses affliction to draw the people back to themself.
Why these two stories???
They are stories that show how we enter the kingdom of God.
Even though God was rejected by Adam & Eve he still clothed them.
God gives even when we don't follow him faithfully.
God never grows weary.
The people of the OT thought they needed a new king, instead of judges, thinking that would fix their problems and God gives them two kings, and then silence.
In silence we deal with who we truly are.
Nicodemus knew the story but at the same time he didn't. He missed that amongst ask of this God was giving and giving and giving.
The fear of rejection leads to irrational actions.
Good had to divorce Israel fir the great idolatries they committed against him. When we reject God he is truly grieved.
Good gave everything there was to give but himself. God shows up as man and we kill him. God goes beyond death to give to us. He gives us the Spirit, his fullness. He gives us more.
Reject God all you want but he will continue to give, and in the end he will reveal himself in full to humanity.
GOOD GIVES EVERYTHING SO THAT WE MAY HAVE LIFE.
Nicodemus cubes back in John 19
He buys 75 pounds of myrrh and aloe to bury King Jesus. This cost him financially and probably culturally as well.
To believe God is constantly generous is difficult, especially among constant trial.
On the darkest day of history God still gave and was completely generous.
Good identified with Jesus and then had to bury the savior of the world. Nicodemus still believes.
SOMETIMES THE GREATEST JOY COMES IN THE DARKEST HOUR OF IMMENSE SUFFERING.
When we are rejected we should be led to give more.
The reason we give to people we don't know is because God gave of himself immensely.
