What Makes God Angry?
- Zephaniah was written during reign of Josiah (good king known for his reforms; 2 kings 23:24; 23:36,37-Son becomes king, and does evil like those ancestors had done)
Why was God so angry, even though Josiah was good? He wasn't really successful.
Zephaniah 1:5- First thing to cause anger: Those who were worshipping God and Molech
-Infamous idol associated with people who practiced child sacrifices
-Syncretism: mixture of worldliness and hodgepodge religious activities
-If you worship God and anything else, you're guilty of the sin of syncretism
2nd thing to make angry: Zephaniah 1:6
-Turned from the Lord and forget him
-He's not a meaningful part of their lives
-If God has no real influence in your life...you are a practical atheist
3rd thing to make angry: Zephaniah 1:7
-Complacency- thinking the Lord will do nothing one way or the other
-Wine on dregs?
Involved in making wine; Juice goes into container and the sediments went to the bottom. They then syphoned the liquid. If not done right, it's too sweet
-Stuck in a rut; satisfied where you are, and you become stale-especially you're relationships with people and with God
