An ear to slavery
In Psalm 40:6, David says that God preferred to give David an "open ear" over receiving sacrifice. Some translations and commentaries link this concept to the Hebrew tradition of ear-boring (opening a hole) among slaves. This wasn't a surgery of ownership, however. Rather, it was a display of the slave's love for the master, and the master's love for and devotion to the slave. What an awesome display of how we are to relate to God - willing submission out of love and humility, and His reciprocation of love and security.
