The body of Christ is to be diverse yet equal

Paul wrote a letter to the church in Corinth to chastise them and answer questions that they had. Paul corrects the church for touting their gifts of the Spirit as badges of honor. They were exalting the spectacular gifts such as tongues over the others. Paul sharply corrected them. The Christians are supposed to function like parts of a human body, each part specialized, essential, and worthy of honor. Gifts were meant to edify the body, not exalt the self.
Paul also described the offices of the body - apostle, prophet, teacher, etc. In Ephesians, Paul wrote that the job of these leaders is to equip the body for ministry. The church was a mess and needed Paul to have the "painful visit" and write the "harsh letter" to them, which they received in humility.
We have many different members serving many different functions. Some do not serve, which makes the body less efficient and glorious. But there are seasons for everything. Regardless of title or gifting, we are equal in the Lord's eyes. We are to love each other and live in unity in spite of or theological or personal differences.
