Some bitter Pill to Swallow!
Most of the time I heard sermon comparing the church to an hospital where people come to get cured from all kind of diseases. Because we all have different kind of struggle with sin, this comparison fit the bill. It's a powerful metaphor and I love it. As I look at all the prescriptions provided by our soul doctor, I stumble across some bitter pill to swallow. Our religion is so full of fanatics! We even try to use verses of the Bible to our advantage and neglect verses that can serve us as prescriptions. When others fall short of something we tend to criticize them and see ourselves as better. Serving God requires sacrifice and if you read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation you will come across some hard pill to swallow. Here's a short list:
“But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you.....................
James 1:2-3 (NIV)
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.
James 1:26 (NIV)
Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.
“Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.
Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.
Let us pause and think about what it really means to be Christian and stop bragging about our religion.
