Ps 37:4&23 - Delight
In order to understand Delight you need to first know what Desire is and where it rests - in the heart. All through the Bible when it mentions "heart" it's talking about your spirit. So when it says "desires of your heart" it's talking about the desires of your Spirit. Now, we know Hebrews 4:12 talks about the Word of God dividing the Soul and the Spirit, so that your mind, will, and emotions (soul) now are under the leadership and guidance of a brand new Spirit (God's Spirit). This Spirit is in in your heart, which is where the Law of God is now placed, and your heart resides in your chest - this is a picture of the ark of the Covenant in the OT where the tablets of stone (10 Commandments) were placed in a chest which resided in the Holy of Holies. Our hearts are now the place of the Holy of Holies.
So, back to Delight. When our spirits are reborn and now they are ONE with God's spirit we find ourselves having brand new desires - these desires are found within the heart because that's where our spirit is. However, our carnal mind still has desires of its own and it has the power of emotion behind it, which often times confuses us into thinking that our hearts are the one with the desires. It's actually our sinful soul that's "feeling" a way contrary to what our new spirit says it should feel. Remember the saying, "the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak"? That's what it looks like when you know you should do something (your spirit knows it) yet you have a hard time doing it (your soul is taking over). So when David is talking about God granting the desire of your heart he's saying that when you delight in God then God will grant you the desire of your spirit, which is going to be a pure desire because it's really HIS spirit that's doing the desiring! Does that make sense?
As for the act of delighting, think about your favorite ice cream. You see a nice bowl of that stuff and your saliva glands kick into gear and you begin to have a full-on emotional experience over this thing as you crave it longingly! That's delight. When our Spirits are re-born and we are allowing God to have full-sway in our lives, submitting to Him and His commands, our spirits find themselves delighting in Him as much as we delight in our favorite ice cream. And when you delight in Him in this way then He has no problem granting you whatever your Spirit desires because His spirit and your spirit are One, so He's actually just granting His own request! If you have never had this type of delight in God then you need a "renewed" spirit - you need to feed your spirit. You do that with God's Word and time spent alone with Him, growing in relationship with Him. You can't do it any other way. And the more time you spend with Him the more delight you'll find in Him! And then we'll find that not only are we delighting in God but He's delighting in us!!!!! (vs 23)
