Luke 2:20 - They went back
After the shepherds experienced the greatest announcement in the history of mankind and after they visited Jesus they went right back to shepherding. They went back to the drab drudgery of scooping poop and walking slowly, the mundane routine of every day life. After David was annointed king he did the very same thing - went back to work! The same thing happened when the inhabitants of Jerusalem in Nehemiah's day went to fight to defend their city against an enemy - after the victorious battle they went right back to their place on the wall and commenced with the repairs.
My dad always said that the christian life is filled with hours and hours of routine punctuated by moments of pure bliss. We can't live for the moments of pure bliss - we need to go back to our place on the wall, we need to go back to our fields and tend our sheep, whatever that may mean for you. And when you are in the way of your duty, completing the work God has called for you to do, it's only those that God can show up to and they not miss it! These shepherds were doing their duty when the angel showed up to them to make the announcment of Jesus' birth. David was doing his duty when Samuel showed up. We need to be doing our duty so that we are ready when Jesus comes!!!! Go back, don't live for the moment, and complete your work!
