Deut 11:22 - Stay Close
Moses has given a host of commands but here are three that are especially potent if we want to possess that which God wants us to possess:
1) Love God
2) Follow Him
3) Stay Close
I have written a lot about Loving God and Following Him in other Notes (see Note on Deut 10:12-13 - What does God require), but I want to focus on Staying Close.
Moses is telling the people to "Hold Fast" to God - to stay as close as you possibly can. Imagine if you're about to fall off a cliff and someone repels down to save you - you would cling onto him for dear life!!!!! There's nothing that could get you off that dude! You know that your life depends upon you just hanging on to him, and the tighter you cling to him the better chance you have of being saved! This is what Moses is referring to! God will fight for the people and He will bring them safely into the land of Promise, but only if they hold fast to Him - only if they stay really close! And this is something we can do as well!
How do we stay close? How do we cling tightly? Well, that's the definition of intimacy isn't it? There is a closeness that a married couple can experience that can be experienced in not other way. This is physical intimacy, but spiritual intimacy involves the same principles. It involves getting alone with Him, exposing ourselves fully to Him, and embracing Him with every ounce of energy we have. Staying close to Jesus means we have to spend time with Him and allow our affections to move towards Him - it's cyclical, meaning that the more time we spend with Him the more we love Him and the more we love Him the more time we want to spend with Him! This is how you stay close!
