Can you imagine what it would be like to have Jesus preaching in your church this Sunday. What do you think would be the response? Look at the response here in this passage in Luke.
The response is not what we would expect.
Lets look at the responses.
How are we responding?
1/. The custom Jesus followed. (16)
Jesus returns from the wilderness filled with the Holy Spirit's power. He headed straight to the synagogue. He taught regularly in the synagogue. He explained the scriptures and told how they all pointed to Him. The people were praising Him for what they were hearing. He then came to Nazareth and as usual headed to the synagogue.
2/. The scripture Jesus selected. (17-19)
He reads from Isaiah. Chapter 61 verses 1 and 2 was where He read from. This was a messianic passage. This was a prophecy of the coming of the messiah.
The eyes of everyone was on Jesus. How would He explain.
3/. The explanation He offered. (21)
He tells this The scripture you've just heard has been fulfilled today here and now. Normally they would have heard the priest saying, one day this will happen. Today they were being told it has happened today.
4/. The response He received. (22-30)
All spoke well of Him and were amazed at His gracious words. However they soon were adding, Isn't this Joseph's son. They were sceptical of what He had said.
Jesus knew what they were thinking.
He gives them a couple of stories from the Old Testament. He warns the people of Nazareth if
They don't accept Him for who He is, He'll just move on.
They were hostile to His message. They mobbed Him. They forced Him to the edge of the town but He escaped. They planned to kill Him, but His time had not yet come.
If Jesus preached in your church today, what would be the response. Either He would be accepted or rejected. You would either be for Him or against Him. You would either trust Him to take your sin and repent or you would tell Him to get lost.
