Deut 6:12-13, 8:11-14 - The Formula for Remembering
In Deut 6:12-13 we see Moses giving stern instruction to the Israelites about "watching themselves" when they enter into this really cool land with all of this neat stuff so they don't forget that God is the One who's given them all these things. He then moves on to say that you should "fear" God only, thus intimating that Fear and Forgetfulness are linked.
In Deut 8:11-14 we see that Obedience and Forgetfulness are linked as well. In vs 11 he says, "do not forget the Lord 'by not keeping His commandments'........" All of these instructions by Moses have come on the heels of his discourse about Loving God. He taught them that Love for God would guide them to make the right decisions, and now he's explaining how the wrong decisions will happen and what the punishment for these wrong decisions will be.
Here's what Moses is saying:
Your Love for God sets the stage for Fear to enter the picture - much like we fear our fathers even though we love them dearly. Fear causes you to Obey. Obedience causes you to Remember. So it looks like this: Love - Fear - Obey - Remember.
On the flip side, if you don't Love God then a new type of Fear enters the picture - fear of man. When you fear man more than you fear God it will lead to Disobedience, which ultimately will harden your conscience to a point where you have completely Forgotten all that God has done for you. So it looks like this: No Love - No Fear - Disobedience - Forget.
Moses has explained beautifully how we can make sure that when we follow God and receive the blessings that will come our way we will never allow them to cause us to drift away from Him.
