Selling Your Daughter
Very difficult verse but I'll try. Selling children into slavery was typically done to pay off debts. It was a common practice, as incomprehensible as it may seem to us. God permitted it because He wanted His people to pay their debts. However, He regulated the practice to protect the daughter sold into slavery.
The reason for the difference in laws governing male and female slaves was that a female slave was assumed to have been a sexual object for her owner. If she were released after 6 years, no one would want to marry her because she was not a virgin and in this culture, no one would see to her needs. This was a sentence of extreme poverty and/or starvation. She could be redeemed, assumedly by her family who would care for her, or she would remain the property of her owner with all marital rights kept intact, even if the owner formally married another. That's also the reason God forbid allowing her to be sold to foreigners. A foreigner wouldn't obey God's command to care for the woman.
