Do You Really Understand?
God is also concerned about our physical needs.
Truth:God has unlimited power and provision. See 1 Kings 17 on Elijah's miracle with the widow's jar and the provision of manna to the Israelites.
The Pharisees came and began to argue with him, seeking from him a sign from heaven to test him. And he sighed deeply in his spirit and said, "Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation." And he left them, got into the boat again, and went to the other side.Mark 8:11-13 (ESV)
Why is this here? To remind the reader of the opposition to Jesus by the religious leadership and to show the hardness of heart that was present among God's people even after the great miracle of the feeding of the 4,000.
And he cautioned them, saying, "Watch out; beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod."Mark 8:15 (ESV)
Here Jesus referred to the thinking, mindset, ideas and world view of the Pharisees. These are spiritual things. In verse 16 the disciples were thinking worldly things.
Circumstances can cause us to look past the truth. Nothing is beyond God's control or ability to provide for spiritually orphysically.
Four Reasons We Can't See the Truth:
- Hard Hearts: Guard your heart! Don't allow your focus to shift from God to whatever troubles you.
- Spiritual Blindness.
- Spiritual Deafness.
- Not Remembering. We tend to forget what God has done for us in the past so that in the future we will have faith that God will take care of us. See Exodus 16 as the Israelites grumbled against God despite all the miraculous things He did to bring them out of Egypt.
In the midst of life's circumstances, focus on the Truth. Do this by reminding each other who God is, what He has done and look into the Word to see how God answered the trials of many faithful.
This doesn't mean to ignore the pain and do nothing. When Job was told of all the calamities that came to him he tore his robes as a sign of his grief. But rely on God to give us the strength so that we may get through it.
