Refocusing Our Lives
Historical Background:At the time of Paul the city of Collosae was losing its prominence as a trading city since the trade routes were in process of shifting away from Collosae.
Because of Christ's sacrifice for us on the cross we're not to live our lives for ourselves but for Him. Above all we're to "seek the things that are above." The NIV says it this way, "set you hearts on...". This is written in the present continual form, meaning that this is a continuous process that never ceases.
Christ is in Heaven now acting as our intermediary, seated at God's right hand (Eph 1:20)
We make monuments to dead leaders but Christ is alive now and always.
Verse 1 focuses on our actions and passions.Does your life revolve around Christ? Do your actions reflect attaining the Heavenly Kingdom or are you focused on gaining in earthly things? The answers to these questions determine if you're focused on "things above."
Verse 2 describes our thoughts and attitudes, an inner focus. This is the lens of our life, which, must be eternity. How often do you think about Heaven and spiritual things, eternity? The normal, honest answer must not be the way we think.
Maintain a proper focus in life.
