Deut 4:9, 15 & 29 - Keep Your Soul *
Interesting verses here - vs 9 says, "give heed to yourself and 'keep your soul' diligently......" Obviously there's something that must watch over your soul. There's a division there. What is soul? Mind, Will, Emotions. Vs 15 says, "Watch yourself.....so that you do not act corruptly....." - how can your self (your soul) watch yourself? It's your Spirit that needs to do the watching! Vs 29 goes even a step further - "......you will find (God) if you search for Him with all your 'heart' and all your soul." Another division. We see in this verse that Moses has separated "heart" from "soul."
Check out Heb 4:12 - "The Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, it penetrates even to the dividing of 'soul' and spirit'......." Here it is again. That same division.
Here's the crux of the matter and what Moses is getting at - your Spirit needs to lead your Soul. Your spirit needs to tell your Mind what to think, your Emotions what to feel, and your Will what to do. Your spirit is also called your "heart," although many people confuse heart with emotion. Emotions are a part of God's plan, but we are never to be led by them. We are to be led by the Spirit of God which resides inside of us as our Spirits have been "re-born" upon salvation. This is the picture of what Moses is getting at in these verses, and what Heb 4:12 talks about. The great Division!
Very important that we all grasp this.
