Num 29 - Just let it all go!
The more and more I read about the sacrificial system the more and more I see a common theme of "JUST LET IT ALL GO!" Here in Numbers 29 we see God establishing an entire month where there would be large gatherings and boat loads of sacrifices going on. I'm talking LOTS of sacrificing. Perfectly good animals that were good for plowing fields, making clothes, feeding people - GONE. Just like that. God said, "kill 'em!" And the Israelites obeyed. They feared God. Yea, they were a bunch of screw-balls just like us, but yet they feared God and obeyed Him, giving up their very best animals for sacrifice because God simply told them to.
Animals in the OT were a sign of wealth. If you had lots of animals then you had lots of wealth. When it came time to sacrifice you were essentially paying for it out of your wealth. And God's parties were very expensive ones! It was going to cost you something if you were going to one of His gatherings - oh yea, and you had no choice as to whether or not you were going to attend. It was mandatory if you wanted His presence to remain in the camp.
So I can imagine these Israelites understood that "their" wealth was really "His" wealth because the more they gave up in sacrifice the more animals ended up in their fields to replace. They just kept seeing this over and over and over. The seventh month cost them 1/4 of their wealth and by the tenth month their flocks were not only back to where they were in numbers but there was even more! Craziness!
God's ways aren't our ways, and the one thing He requires of us is US! Our everything. All that we are, all that we own, is HIS. If you hold back anything from Him then you aren't His. This principle is so powerful. And it's this attitude of heart that reveals who His true disciples are. Uh, I'm convicted.
