Day#11 What on Earth am I Here For?
God wants to be your best friend!
Your relationship to God has many different aspects... he's your Creator, maker, Lord, judge, father, Savior and much more. But the shocking truth is the Almighty God yearns to be your friend!
In Eden, we see God's ideal relationship with us: Adam and Eve enjoyed an intimate friendship with God- No rituals, ceremony or religion.. just a simple loving relationship between God and His people.
We were made to live in God continual presence, but after the fall, that ideal relationship was lost. Only a few people in the Old Testament had the privilege of friendship with God. Fear of God was more common in the Old Testament (actually its common today too). But, Jesus changed the situation.. he paid for our sins on the cross. We were no longer seperated from God- direct access to God was once again available.
We can approach God anytime. God invited us to enjoy friendship and fellowship with all 3 persons of the Trinity: Our Father, The son and the Holy Spirit.
Trusted friends enjoy close contact. It's hard to understand God wants u to be a close friend- an omnipotent, invisible, perfect God and a sinful human being. But the Bible says, "He is a God who is passionate about his relationship with you." Ex34:14
Knowing and loving God is our greatest privilege! And being known and loved is God's greatest pleasure! God says "If anyone wants to boast, they should boast that they know and understand me... these are the things that please me". Jer9:24
What does it mean "God wants to be my friend?" Using the Bible, let's look at the secrets to a friendship with God...
You will never grow, just by attending church or even having daily quiet time. Friendship with God is built by sharing all your life experiences with him. He wants to be included in every activity, every conversation, every problem, and every thought. You can carry on continuous, open-ended conversation with him throughout your day. The bible says, "pray without ceasing" 1Th5:17
A common misconception is that spending time with God mean being alone with him. Of course jesus modeled, you need time alone with God, but that's only a fraction of your waking hours. Everything you do can be spending time with God, if he's invited to be part it and you stay aware of his presence. The key to friendship with God is not changing what you do, but changing your attitude toward what you do. In eden, worship was not an event, it was an attitude.
Pray shorter conversational prayers, continually through the day. No need to use a great multiplicity of words- long prayers can cause u to wander. Keep it simple.. practice using one breathe sentences, throughout the day, to help u "pray without ceasing"..
Rick Warren uses the following examples:
"you are with me"
"I receive your grace"
"I'm depending on you"
"I want to know u"
"I belong to u"
"Help me trust u"
Once u know him and how much he much loves u.. u will love back.. and trust him more!!. The constant conversation will help u to grow closer to Jesus. I added a few of my "breathe prayers":
Thank you God
I Love u Jesus
U amaze me Lord
Cleanse my heart
Help me God
I need u God
Give me ur words
Fill me with ur spirit
Ur my everything
In total awe (this 1 w/tears of joy♥)
Think about God's Word throughout your day- this is called meditation. The Bible urges us to meditate on who god is, what hes done and what he says. Rom6:17
It is impossible to be God's friend without knowing what he says. You can't LOVE God unless you KNOW him... and you can't know him without knowing "his word".
U can't spend the entire day studying the Bible, but you can think about it throughout your day. Recalling verses you have read or memorized- mulling over them in your mind.
Meditation is just focused thinking- A skill anyone can learn to use anywhere. If you know how to worry, you already know how to meditate! U just need to switch ur attention from ur problems to bible verses... When you think about God's word over and over that's called meditation!!
Friend share secrets, and God will share his secrets with you, if you develop the habit of thinking about his word throughout the day. When you read your Bible or hear a sermon, don't just forget about it. Develop the practice of reviewing the truth in your mind- think about it over and over. The more time you spend reviewing what God says, the more you will understand the "secret" of this life- the secret that most people miss.
The Bible says, "Friendship with God is reserved for those who reverence him. With them alone he shares the secrets of his promises"
Start today by practicing constant conversation with God and continual meditation on his word!
