Mark 5:9 / 8:27-30 - Identify yourself *
I find it very interesting that Jesus asked the demon what his name was - He was communicating with the demon that was inside this man and not the man himself. So when Jesus said to the man, "what is your name" the demon is the one that answered. This man's real name wasn't "Legion" - it was probably just a normal Hebrew name. But Jesus commanded the demon to identify himself so that he could cast him out!
When Jacob wrestled with God before God freed Himself from Jacob He asked him his name - "Jacob" which meant deceiver. Jacob had to identify himself to God, recognize who he was, before God changed his name to Israel. Jacob had to admit who he was, and in repentance for being a deceiver he got his name changed! He was now a brand new person - his identity changed when his name changed. The same occurred for Abraham and Paul and Peter! Jesus changed their names - He gave them brand new identities!
So in this story in the NT Jesus had to first get this man to admit what he was filled with before he could cast it out of him, and then on the foundation of having the evil spirits removed this man got his name back!
There are many ways to apply this principle, but I will stick with just two:
When Temptation comes "identify" it - call it out for what it is. Remind yourself of who it comes from. Then remind yourself who you are! You're not Jacob the deceiver, you're Israel the overcomer! Same person, different identity!
In Mark 8:27-30 we see Jesus asking His disciples to Identify Him! He turned the tables around. This is where Peter spoke up and properly identified Jesus as the Messiah (the King) and Jesus in return identifies Peter as the ROCK on which the church would be built. Peter had to identify Jesus as King before Jesus ever even mentioned the word Church! Yet, Peter still did not know who he was until he properly identified himself as a traitor to Jesus. Notice how just after Jesus says Peter is the Rock He also calls him Satan (this happens in the other gospels, not in Mark). Peter didn't even realize who he was at that moment, but Jesus knew who he was and soon Peter would as well. At the moment in which Peter properly identified Christ he still was not ready to be the rock in which the church was built upon, until God took him through an identity crisis of his own.
Notice that the devil doesn't attempt to ask anyone's name - he doesn't want Believers recalling who they are when he comes their way. He wants them to forget who they are. So when the devil comes your way you need to REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE!
Before the cleansing hand of Jesus can have its full sway in your life you must first identify who you are, as so many of the bible characters did. You must admit that you are a deceiver (Jacob) but that you want to be an overcomer (Israel). Without this admission the evil spirit will remain! You must also identify who Jesus is - is He just Savior or is He Lord? Lord is a Kingdom term that represents "He's in control!" When you properly identify yourself and properly identify him, then you gain a brand new identity!!!!!
**as a side note - look at Numbers 6:27 - God is saying to the Priests that if they put God's Name on the people then He will in fact bless them. God would see these people through the lens of His own name, recognizing them as His, thus blessing them as His.
