Seems like the Israelites made some rash decisions and vows that they regretted .
They go to war against the Benjamin tribe and wipe them almost entirely out...
At Mizpah the men of Israel had sworn, “Not one of us will let his daughter marry a man from the tribe of Benjamin.” (Judges 21:1 NCV)
The swore that, so that is that! But now..
The elders of the Israelites said, “The women of Benjamin have been killed. Where can we get wives for the men of Benjamin who are still alive? (Judges 21:16 NCV)
Oh, now they are sorry for swearing
That! A little quick on the swearing perhaps! Too late now! Can't take it back!
The Benjamin men that are left from that fiasco don't have enough women left for them to marry!
But they got other issues to worry about too...
Then the Israelites asked, “Did any tribe of Israel not come here to meet with us in the presence of the Lord?” They asked this question because they had sworn that anyone who did not meet with them at Mizpah would be killed. (Judges 21:5 NCV)
Thats a harsh statement!!! Another rash vow? Now they must kill an entire tribe if they pull a no show..
Well, Jabesh Gilead didn't show!
The people of Israel counted everyone, but there was no one from Jabesh Gilead.
So the whole group of Israelites sent twelve thousand soldiers to Jabesh Gilead to kill the people with their swords, even the women and children.
“This is what you must do: Kill every man in Jabesh Gilead and every married woman.” (Judges 21:9-11 NCV)
The people from Jabesh Gilead were history... Just like that!
Because they didn't show up!
Would a good header have made such hasty and extreme decisions? Many people died from those sworn vows!
But....there was NO leader!
In those days Israel did not have a king. All the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes. (Judges 21:25 NCV)
Jabesh Gilead destroyed, and the Benjamin's are without enough women to keep the family name going.....
So the men of Benjamin came back at that time. The Israelites gave them the women from Jabesh Gilead who had not been killed, but there were not enough women.
The people of Israel felt sorry for the Benjaminites because the Lord had separated the tribes of Israel. The elders of the Israelites said, “The women of Benjamin have been killed. Where can we get wives for the men of Benjamin who are still alive? These men must have children to continue their families so a tribe in Israel will not die out. But we cannot allow our daughters to marry them, because we swore, ‘Anyone who gives a wife to a man of Benjamin is cursed.’ (Judges 21:14-18 NCV)
Seems like they goofed up somewhere! Now they have to amend their mistakes! So now, they have a 'new idea'....
So the elders told the men of Benjamin, “Go and hide in the vineyards. Watch for the young women from Shiloh to come out to join the dancing. Then run out from the vineyards and take one of the young Shiloh women and return to the land of Benjamin.
So that is what the Benjaminites did. While the young women were dancing, each man caught one of them, took her away, and married her.
Then they went back to the land God had given them and rebuilt their cities and lived there. (Judges 21:20, 21, 23 NCV)
So...they take the dancing women at Shiloh and now the men at Shiloh are left without women!!!!
And what about all these women? Being herded like a bunch of cattle!
Round em up....
It looks to me like we need good leadership. It's SO important!
The president of our country will either be pro life or pro choice!
They will either condone homosexual marriages or they won't allow it!
They will either work on paying down the deficit it ...... Or, they'll borrow some more!
They'll either stand for JESUS...
Or they'll be stand for any god.
They'll either allow prayer in public places, courthouses, schools...
Or they'll be politically correct and ban it!
When elections come...VOTE! We don't want to say ....
In those days America did not have a president. All the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes. (Judges 21:25 NCV)
