Ps 23:1 - David & the Centurian
There's only one time in the NT where Jesus said, "Never before have I seen such great faith" and that was when He was approached by a Centurian who explained to Jesus that he was familiar with the authority Jesus had because he too carried authority over his troops - this Centurian was faithful in his position of authority over his troops and therefore he equated to Jesus this same faithfulness in His position of authority. The Centurian saw God as he saw himself, and this touched the heart of the Lord.
Here in this verse we see David saying "the Lord is MY shepherd" - David was very familiar with shepherding because he too was a shepherd. He knew what it was like to be in charge of taking care of sheep. Armed with this understanding David essentially says "I know what it's like to be in charge of sheep and to watch out for their well being. Knowing what I know about how I took care of my sheep, God takes care of me in the exact same way!" God will always reveal Himself to you spiritually as you are in reality. If David were a bad shepherd then he could have never trusted God as his shepherd. But David was a faithful shepherd and therefore he saw God as a faithful shepherd.
If God is hard and cruel then it's because you are hard and cruel. It's the same thing Cain went through - he brought a bad sacrifice and therefore God became to him like he was to God, a blessing-withholding kill-joy bent on punishing people. If Cain would have been faithful to bring God his best then he would have seen God as a faithful God who wants to give Cain His best.
