Matt 26:40-45 - Keep Watch AND Pray....... *
Notice that before Peter denied Jesus he was prepped for the occasion by a lack of Keeping Watch. Jesus brought him with Him to keep watch, but Peter's flesh would have none of that so he drifted off into la-la-land. We all know what this feels like! Peter just couldn't stay awake. His lake of awareness is what paved the way to his great sin.Jesus' initial command was to "keep watch" - He didn't start with "Pray" - He started with "Keep Watch" (vs 38 & 40). Then in verse 41, after He caught them sleeping He goes further to say "Keep watch AND Pray...." In our prayers we must Keep Watch for the enemy to come. Jesus was expecting His enemies to come at any moment to take Him away and He needed His three top guys to stand guard. They were so tired they couldn't do it.Remember the story of Gideon's army and how God widdled down their number from 30,000 to 300? Remember how he differentiated between the men who were ready to fight and those who weren't? It wasn't because they had better weapons or were in better shape or better fighters - it was those who while filling their bodies with nourishment (drinking water from the brook) were standing alert and keeping watch for the enemy. Those were the guys that made the cut. Here we see Jesus telling His disciples to drink of Him through prayer and to stand watch at the same time, but they couldn't do it - they were just like one of the 29,700 that put their faces fully into the water without keeping watch for the enemy. They had not the discipline to keep watch even for one hour!Jesus found them sleeping three different times. The first time He woke them up, the second time He left them alone, the third time it was already too late - the enemy was upon them! They were fully asleep in one moment, but seconds later they were fully awake and alert, but by then it was already too late. So how did Peter respond? He pulled out his sword - he used the WRONG WEAPON! If he would have remained in prayer and kept watch he would have known which weapon to use.All of this took place shortly after Jesus gave His disciples the teaching on "if the head of the house had been ready the thief wouldn't have gotten into the house...." - Now we see His disciples "being" the people Jesus warned them not to be.
(notice how in Mark 13:33-37 Jesus prepped His disciples for this)
