Matt 26:28 - Blood Covenant
When Jesus passed the cup around to the disciples He said, "this is MY blood of the covenant....." - they knew very well what a Blood Covenant was and how God sealed His promise to Abraham with a Covenant of Blood. All the disciples were very learned in the Old Testament, so they knew very well what he Passover meant and why they were eating this meal (to remember the angel of death passing over the Israelites' homes when it found blood over the doorpost). But here we have Jesus changing things a bit and challenging the ideas they had in their minds of what Blood was all about. When He said "this is MY blood" He was saying that the very God that passed through the two halves of the ox (Gen 15) for Abraham, the seal of the Blood Covenant, was HIM! The blood that was put over the doorposts in Egypt was HIS blood! In order for Blood to signify a covenant in the OT an animal had to die (an ox for the covenant with Abraham and a lamb for the covenant with the Israelites in Egypt), but here Jesus is saying that HE is going to be the sacrifice that would seal an everlasting covenant for the remission of sin forever! No more lambs needed to be killed for the death angel to pass over us. No more oxen needed to be split in two for God to seal the deal on His covenant with us. Jesus took their place and became the object to be sacrificed for the final Blood Covenant.
