It's got to be kind of frustrating to be labeled the wisest man in the world, to be filled with so much wisdom, yet unable to find the answers to some of the most sought out questions man has!!!
I said to myself, “I have become very wise and am now wiser than anyone who ruled Jerusalem before me. I know what wisdom and knowledge really are.
(Ecclesiastes 1:16 NCV)
It seems to be Solomon that has earned that title...
" Heavy weight wise guy of of the world!
The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.
I, the Preacher, have been king over Israel in Jerusalem.
(Ecclesiastes 1:1, 12 NASB)
Everyone looks to you to give the all the answers Mr. wisest guy in the world!
Even the queen of Sheba came hundreds of miles via camel, a very long way to hear your wisdom!
She was impressed!
But ...we want to know more, tell us things no one has ever said before!
All things continue the way they have been since the beginning. What has happened will happen again; there is nothing new here on earth. (Ecclesiastes 1:9 NCV)
The gossip magazines write for hungry people such as these... the
"Curious minds that just want to know! "
They don't want to hear old news!
They wanted the latest up to date news ...about him or her or this or that!
They want exciting news!
But Solomon assures them it's the same old -same old.
Everything is boring, so boring that you don’t even want to talk about it. Words come again and again to our ears, but we never hear enough, nor can we ever really see all we want to see.
(Ecclesiastes 1: 8 NCV)
He's heard it all, seen it all!
He assures them nothing is new!
What goes around comes around.
People don’t remember what happened long ago, and in the future people will not remember what happens now.
Even later, other people will not remember what was done before them.
(Ecclesiastes 1:11 NCV)
If Adam and Eve had the answers, they forgot to tell their kids! Or their kids forgot to tell their kids! Because...no one knows all the answers!
We don't get how they could make things like the pyramids back then...
with the limited technology they had --it seems impossible!
Someone didn't remember to tell the next generation how they did it!
Now we don't know!
Solomon had a great task set before him, expectations he just couldn't meet!
He says it matter of factly -
This is what I DO know!
People live, and people die, but the earth continues forever.
The sun rises, the sun sets, and then it hurries back to where it rises again.
The wind blows to the south; it blows to the north. It blows from one direction and then another.
Then it turns around and repeats the same pattern, going nowhere.
All the rivers flow to the sea, but the sea never becomes full. (Ecclesiastes 1:4-7 NCV)
There! That's what I do know! Not how it happens, but THAT it happens!
Oh, we may have fancy radars that show us the weather, but they STILL predict it wrong!
We have technology that Solomon could only dream of, but we still seek to understand the cycle of life and death, to understand it all!
At one time humans may have known more...but humans fell into sin, and we are missing a few brain cells now!
We have a bent towards evil since the fall of man, and we're handicapped!
If something is crooked, you can’t make it straight. If something is missing, you can’t say it is there. (Ecclesiastes 1:15 NCV)
Maybe Solomon didn't realize the great wisdom he was giving to us when he said:
So I decided to find out about wisdom and knowledge and also about foolish thinking, but this turned out to be like chasing the wind.
" (Ecclesiastes 1:17,NCV)
Chasing the wind? Well, you can't catch the wind!
So, don't chase the wind...chase God!
With much wisdom comes much disappointment; the person who gains more knowledge also gains more sorrow."
(Ecclesiastes 1:18 NCV)
The wiser we get the dumber we know we are!
Mans wisdom is not God's wisdom!
Solomon had been to the top and to the bottom and everywhere In between , and he knew what he was talking about when he said:
The Teacher says, “Useless! Useless! Completely useless! Everything is useless.” What do people really gain from all the hard work they do here on earth? (Ecclesiastes 1:2, 3 NCV)
We gain nothing when we work like little ants to build our own kingdoms here on earth....
Earthly work without a spiritual purpose equals ...
“Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher; “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.” (Ecclesiastes 1:2 NKJV)
It equals emptiness to the limit!
Have a purpose to live and then live out your purpose!
And chase God, not the wind!
Now THAT'S some wisdom for us to chew on!
