Follow the leader
Follow the leader
While Joshua was alive, people followed the Lord!
Israel served God through the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him, who had themselves experienced all that God had done for Israel. (Joshua 24:31 MSG)
People follow a good leader. The trouble is, they follow a bad one too!
But Joshua was a good one..He loved God! He was not a dictator, but a leader. He didn't demand or command all the people to serve his God, he told them to make up their own mind!
And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. (Joshua 24:15 NKJV)
The people are quick to assure Joshua they will serve Him too!
The people answered, "We'd never forsake God! Never! We'd never leave God to worship other gods. "God is our God! He brought up our ancestors from Egypt and from slave conditions. He did all those great signs while we watched. He has kept his eye on us all along the roads we've traveled and among the nations we've passed through. Just for us he drove out all the nations, Amorites and all, who lived in the land.
"Count us in: We too are going to worship God. He's our God." (Joshua 24:16, 17 MSG)
But Joshua wants them to be sure they know that following God is not for the double minded, the half/hearted, It takes dedication and perseverance! It is a serious thing! It takes your whole heart!
Then Joshua told the people: "You can't do it; you're not able to worship God. He is a holy God. He is a jealous God. He won't put up with your fooling around and sinning. When you leave God and take up the worship of foreign gods, he'll turn right around and come down on you hard. He'll put an end to you—and after all the good he has done for you!" (Joshua 24:19 MSG)
So often today our leaders give us all the cake and frosting, but no vegetables!
They give us what we think we want to hear...
Health, wealth and a happy ending!
They lead you to believe if you run to the alter and quickly give your heart to Christ your troubles will disappear!
But they fail to tell you the whole truth!
That It will get hard, it's not easy, your troubles may multiply! You may have all you need but you don't get all you want! Think about it before you commit to Him! Because God takes it seriously!
Can you imagine a pastor giving an alter call nowadays and when people start to come forward he tells out, "think about this BEFORE you do it!
There's a cost to pay! This invitation from Christ may be free but it ain't cheap! Don't do it unless you mean it!"
Why they may not have anyone at the alter! How would that look?
When the people assure Joshua that they want to serve God He says:
"You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen God for yourselves—to worship him."
And they said, "We are witnesses." (Joshua 24:22 MSG)
And he goes on to admonish them to get rid of all the evil that they have!
Joshua said, "Now get rid of all the foreign gods you have with you. Say an unqualified Yes to God, the God of Israel." (Joshua 24:23 MSG)
Let's throw out the pornography, get rid of filthy music...throw out books of other religions..,let's get REAL! let's get serious about this commitment thing!
Oh we need leaders like Joshua! Leaders that are not in it for the frills and thrills, but for the reward of getting to serve Christ! The honor of getting to bow our knee to Him!
We need leaders who will tell us the truth and not what sounds good!
You're going to find that there will be times when people will have no stomach for solid teaching, but will fill up on spiritual junk food—catchy opinions that tickle their fancy. They'll turn their backs on truth and chase mirages. But you—keep your eye on what you're doing; accept the hard times along with the good; keep the Message alive; do a thorough job as God's servant. (2 Timothy 4:3 MSG)
Joshua was a great leader! He led the people to God, not himself!
There are a lot of good leaders, but there is only one God! Follow what His Word tells you, not what sounds good!
