The Mercy Seat!
As God shares with Moses the design for the Holy of Holies, it quickly becomes apparent why this room has that name. This is where the Lord was going to dwell and meet with the people. This was indeed the most Holy place on earth. The Ark of the covenant was housed in the Holy of Holies. Inside the Ark of the covenant were the two tablets of the law and the jar of Manna. Most importantly, the Mercy Seat was put over the Ark and under the wings of the cherubim. God knew from the moment that He created the covenant with Moses and the people of Israel that they would not be able to keep it. God’s expectation is holiness and perfection and there isn’t a person or people on the planet that can live up to that standard. But He desired to have a relationship with His creation.
So God has Moses put the mercy seat between the Ark and God. It was where the blood of the Atonement sacrifice would be placed. The High Priest would bring the blood of the lamb into the Holy of Holies and sprinkle it over the mercy seat seeking God’s forgiveness for the transgression of the people. It was the only way that God could continue to see His people and holy and righteous. The blood of the lamb sprinkled on the mercy meat was the only thing that washed away the transgressions of the people.
The same is true for us, too. The blood of the true Lamb (Jesus) was shed on the world’s mercy seat (the Cross) and forever removes our transgression and declares us righteous in God’s sight. What a gracious God we have. He knows our brokenness and weaknesses and loves us anyway. He creates the way that allows us to remain holy in His presence. Let the blood of Jesus stand between your imperfections and God’s Holiness. Let it wash you clean and declare you righteous in God’s sight. Let it stand between your brokenness and God’s holiness.
