"And his armor-bearer said to him, "Do all that is in your heart. Do as you wish. Behold, I am with you heart and soul." 1 Samuel 14:7
Observation: Jonathan's armor-bearer was DEDICATED. LOYAL. And COMMITTED to Jonathan as Jonathan served the God Almighty.
Application: An armor-bearer carried weapons for their partner in battle. They finished off enemies that their partner wounded. And, even deeper, I am struck by the depth of loyalty that this armor-bearer, and others throughout the Bible, exemplify. (See Judges 9:54 to see an armor-bearer kill his partner to save him from shame, see 1 Samuel 16:21 to see David as Saul's armor-bearer... and think of how David served Saul without raising a hand against him even while Saul was so clearly unfit as king).
It makes me question: to whom am I called to be an armor-bearer? Who am I called to fight alongside? For who am I called to carry weapons that my friend can not carry alone? To whom am I called to be loyal, despite all circumstances, trusting that God can use 2 to take down 20? ("And that first strike, which Jonathan and his armor-bearer made, killed about twenty men within as it were half a furrow's length in an acre of land." 1 Sam 14:14)
One thing is for sure: God calls us to loyalty, and commitment, and bearing with one another's burdens... to share in joy and sorrow, victory and defeat.
As I reflect upon my life so far, I can identify mentors and friends who have served in this role in my life through various seasons. People who because of their commitment to me and my growth have pushed me to new depths with God and in relationships with people. We experienced victories TOGETHER that they or I would have never seen alone. And, I am grateful.
I look at my life recognizing current armor-bearers that God has placed in my life, and again, SO grateful. God never ceases to provide for us in unexpected ways. He is faithful to take us deeper in our understanding of Him... in our understanding of our SELVES in Him.... and in our relationships with one another.
Prayer - God. Thank you for being faithful to me. For placing people in my life who are meant to sharpen me (Proverbs 27:17). People who bring a perspective to my life, from you, that I wouldn't have otherwise. Thank you, God, that these people show the same characteristics as Jonathan's armor-bearer: such loyalty, such dedication, such heart. I pray your blessings over these for the blessing they have been to me.
God, I also pray for myself as I walk alongside those to whom you have called me. God, give me the same heart as Jonathan's armor-bearer: willing always to fight, even when the table seems stacked against us recognizing that when we follow after you, anything is possible. Deepen my love for those so that in every circumstance my reply might also be: "Behold, I am with you heart and soul."
Lord, these relationships are such an opportunity to receive and demonstrate your love... I pray that your love would flow purely through me untainted by my flesh and personality. May you be clearly be seen through me.
