1 Corinthians 1:17-21
For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not in cleverness of speech, so that the cross of Christ would not be made void. For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And the cleverness of the clever I will set aside.” Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, God was well-pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.
The gospel will never elevate the messenger.
For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not in cleverness of speech, so that the cross of Christ would not be made void. v. 17
Acts 14:11-12
The gods have become like men and have come down to us. And they began calling Barnabas, Zeus, and Paul, Hermes, because he was the chief speaker.
Romans 1:16
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
Are we hungry for clever communication, or are we truly hungry for God’s truth about salvation and life?
The gospel will never elevate the listener.
…the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing… v. 18
We misunderstand our own sinfulness.
Acts 22:3
I am a Jew…educated under Gamaliel; strictly according to the law of our fathers, being zealous for God just as you all are today…
Acts 22:4
I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and putting both men and women into prison.
Acts 26:9
I thought to myself that I had to do many things hostile to the name of Jesus of Nazareth.
Ephesians 2:1-3
And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.
“Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a _______ like me….”
We misunderstand God’s justice.
We’re not only far from God because of the depths of our sinfulness, but we’re also far from God because of the heights of His Holiness.
Isaiah 6:3
Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Hosts.
Isaiah 53:10-11
“But the Lord was pleased to crush Him, putting Him to grief; if He would render Himself as a guilt offering…as a result of the anguish of His soul, He will see it and be satisfied.”
Do I understand my own sinfulness? God’s holiness? Simple faith?
The gospel will never elevate the world.
…the world through its wisdom did not come to know God. v. 21
1 Corinthians 1:19
Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?
We believe cultural lies that come from clueless people instead of anchoring on timeless truths spoken by an Eternal God, and we’re conflicted over it.
Truth is not ours to redefine.
1 Corinthians 2:2
I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.
