The Plot to Kill Jesus
1After #Mt 26:1-5Lk 22:1-2 two days it was the Passover #Ex 12:11 and the Festival #Jn 5:1 of Unleavened Bread. #Ex 23:15 The chief priests and the scribes #Mt 2:4 were looking for a treacherous #Ps 10:7 way to arrest and kill Him. #Jn 5:18 2“Not during the festival,” they said, “or there may be rioting among the people.”
The Anointing at Bethany
3While #Mt 26:6-13Jn 12:2-8 He was in Bethany #Mk 11:1 at the house of Simon who had a serious skin disease, #Mt 11:5 as He was reclining at the table, #Lv 19:34 a woman came with an alabaster jar of pure and expensive fragrant oil of nard. She broke the jar and poured it on His head. #Rm 12:13 4But some were expressing indignation to one another: “Why has this fragrant oil been wasted? 5For this oil might have been sold for more than 300 denarii #Mt 18:28 and given to the poor.” #Rm 15:26 And they began to scold her.
6Then Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why are you bothering her? She has done a noble thing # 1Pt 2:12 for Me. 7You always have the poor # Dt 15:11 with you, and you can do what is good for them whenever you want, but you do not always have Me. # Lk 10:38-42 8She has done what she could; she has anointed My body # Lk 12:4 in advance for burial. # Jn 19:40 9I assure you: # Ps 72:19; Rv 22:21 Wherever the gospel # Mk 1:1; Php 1:5 is proclaimed in the whole world, # Mt 13:38; 1Jn 2:2 what this woman has done will also be told in memory of her.”
10Then #Mt 26:14-16Lk 22:3-6 Judas Iscariot, #Mk 3:19 one of the Twelve, #Mk 11:11 went to the chief priests #Mt 2:4 to hand Him over #Mk 9:31 to them. 11And when they heard this, they were glad and promised to give him silver. # Or money ; in Mt 26:15 it is specified as 30 pieces of silver; see Zch 11:12-13 #Lk 19:15 So he started looking for a good opportunity to betray #Jn 13:21 Him.
Preparation for Passover
12On #Mt 26:17-19Lk 22:7-13 the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrifice the Passover lamb, #Ex 12:21 His disciples #Mt 9:10Mk 10:10Lk 6:1Jn 6:3Ac 6:1 asked Him, “Where do You want us to go and prepare the Passover so You may eat it? ”
13So He sent two of His disciples and told them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a water jug will meet you. Follow him. 14Wherever he enters, tell the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher # Mk 4:38; Eph 4:11 says, “Where is the guest room for Me to eat the Passover with My disciples? ” ’ 15He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make the preparations for us there.” 16So the disciples #Mk 10:10 went out, entered the city, and found it just as He had told them, and they prepared the Passover.
Betrayal at the Passover
17When #Mt 26:20-25Lk 22:21-23Jn 13:21-30 evening came, He arrived with the Twelve. #Mk 11:11 18While they were reclining and eating, Jesus said, “I assure you: One of you will betray Me — one who is eating with Me! ”
19They began to be distressed and to say to Him one by one, “Surely not I? ”
20He said to them, “It is one of the Twelve — the one who is dipping bread with Me in the bowl. 21For the Son of Man # Mk 2:10 will go just as it is written # Mk 1:2; Ac 15:15 about Him, # Dn 7:21,25; 9:26 but woe # Rv 9:12 to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”
The First Lord’s Supper
22As #Mt 26:26-30Lk 22:17-201Co 11:23-25 they were eating, He took bread, #1Co 10:16 blessed and broke #Mt 14:19|NoBook| 15:36Ac 2:46|NoBook| 20:7|NoBook| 27:35 it, gave it to them, #Lk 24:30 and said, “Take it; # Other mss add eat; this is My body.” # Lk 12:4; Jn 2:21; 6:51
23Then He took a cup, and after giving thanks, #Mk 8:6 He gave it to them, and so they all drank from it. 24He said to them, “This is My blood that establishes the covenant; # Other mss read the new covenant # Ex 24:8; Zch 9:11; Heb 9:18-20; 10:29; 13:20 it is shed # Gn 4:11; Nm 35:33; Lm 4:13; Mt 23:35 for many. # Is 52:13–53:12 25I assure you: # Rv 22:21 I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine # Is 32:12; Hab 3:17; Jms 3:12 until that day when I drink it in a new # Is 25:6; Lk 13:28-29; 14:15-24 way # Or drink new wine ; lit drink it new in the kingdom of God.” # Mk 1:15 26After singing psalms, # Pss 113–118 were sung during and after the Passover meal. they went out to the Mount of Olives. #Mt 21:1
Peter’s Denial Predicted
27Then #Mt 26:31-35Lk 22:31-38Jn 13:31-38 Jesus said to them, “All of you will run away, # Other mss add because of Me this night # Or stumble because it is written: # Ac 15:15
I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep # Mt 7:15 will be scattered. # Zch 13:7 # Zch 13:7
28But after I have been resurrected, # 1Co 15:4 I will go ahead of you to Galilee.” # Mt 17:22
29Peter #Lk 6:14Ac 10:32 told Him, “Even if everyone runs away, I will certainly not! ”
30“I assure you,” Jesus said to him, “today, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times! ” # Mk 14:72
31But he kept insisting, “If I have to die with You, I will never deny You! ” And they all said the same thing.
The Prayer in the Garden
32Then #Mt 26:36-46Lk 22:39-46 they came to a place named Gethsemane, and He told His disciples, #Mk 10:10 “Sit here while I pray.” # Mt 5:44; Ac 12:12 33He took Peter, #Lk 6:14 James, #Ac 12:2 and John #Jn 21:7 with Him, and He began to be deeply distressed and horrified. 34Then He said to them, “My soul is swallowed up in sorrow # Or I am deeply grieved — to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake.” # Rv 16:15 35Then He went a little farther, fell to the ground, and began to pray that if it were possible, the hour #Jn 2:4 might pass from Him. 36And He said, Abba, # Rm 8:15; Gl 4:6 Father! # Mt 5:16; 11:27; Jn 8:42 All things are possible # Mt 19:26; Mk 9:23 for You. Take this cup # Ps 11:6; Is 51:17,22; Lm 4:21; Ezk 23:32-34; Mk 10:38-39; Jn 18:11 away from Me. Nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.”
37Then He came and found them sleeping. “Simon, # Mt 16:17 are you sleeping? ” He asked Peter. #Lk 6:14 “Couldn’t you stay awake one hour? 38Stay awake and pray # Mt 5:44 so that you won’t enter into temptation. # Mt 6:13; Lk 4:13 The spirit # Ps 51:12 is willing, but the flesh # Php 3:3 is weak.”
39Once again He went away and prayed, saying the same thing. 40And He came again and found them sleeping, because they could not keep their eyes open. # Lit because their eyes were weighed down They did not know what to say to Him. #Mk 4:40 41Then He came a third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The time has come. Look, the Son of Man # Mk 2:10 is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. # Mk 8:31; 9:31; 10:33-34 42Get up; # Mk 5:41 let’s go! See — My betrayer is near.”
The Judas Kiss
43While #Mt 26:47-56Lk 22:47-53Jn 18:1-2 He was still speaking, Judas, #Mk 3:19 one of the Twelve, #Mk 11:11 suddenly arrived. With him was a mob, with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes, #Mt 2:4 and the elders. #3Jn 1 44His betrayer had given them a signal. “The One I kiss,” he said, “He’s the One; arrest Him and take Him away under guard.” 45So when he came, he went right up to Him and said, “Rabbi! ” #Jn 11:8 — and kissed Him. 46Then they took hold of Him and arrested Him. 47And one of those who stood by drew his sword, struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his ear.
48But Jesus said to them, “Have you come out with swords and clubs, as though I were a criminal, # Lit as against a criminal to capture Me? 49Every day I was among you, teaching in the temple complex, # Ac 21:26 and you didn’t arrest Me. But the Scriptures # 2Pt 1:20 must be fulfilled.” # Mt 1:22; Mk 9:12 50Then they all deserted Him and ran away. #Mk 4:40Jms 4:7
51Now a certain young man, # Perhaps John Mark who later wrote this Gospel having a linen cloth wrapped around his naked body, was following Him. They caught hold of him, 52but he left the linen cloth behind and ran away naked. #Am 2:16
Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin
53They #Mt 26:57-68Lk 22:54Jn 18:24 led Jesus away to the high priest, #Mt 26:3 and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes #Mt 2:4 convened. #Mk 8:31|NoBook| 10:33 54Peter #Lk 6:14 followed Him at a distance, right into the high priest’s courtyard. He was sitting with the temple police, # Or the officers ; lit the servants #Jn 18:18 warming himself by the fire. # Lit light
55The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin #Mk 13:9 were looking for testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, #Mt 10:21 but they could find none. 56For many were giving false testimony #Pr 6:191Jn 5:10 against Him, but the testimonies did not agree. 57Some stood up and were giving false testimony against Him, stating, 58“We heard Him say, ‘I will demolish this sanctuary made by human hands, #Col 2:11 and in three days I will build another not made by hands.’ ” 59Yet their testimony did not agree #Nm 35:30Dt 17:6|NoBook| 19:15Php 2:6 even on this.
60Then the high priest stood up before them all and questioned Jesus, “Don’t You have an answer to what these men are testifying against You? ” 61But He kept silent and did not answer anything. #Is 53:7Mt 27:12Mk 15:5Lk 23:9Jn 19:9 Again the high priest questioned Him, “Are You the Messiah, #Mt 1:17Eph 5:2 the Son #Jn 5:19Heb 1:2 of the Blessed #Lk 1:68Rm 1:25|NoBook| 9:52Co 1:3|NoBook| 11:31Eph 1:31Pt 1:3 One? ”
62“I am,” # Ex 3:14; Ps 45:8; Jn 8:24 said Jesus, “and all of you # Lit and you will see the Son of Man # Mk 2:10; Ac 7:56 seated at the right hand # Mt 20:21 of the Power and coming with the clouds # Mt 26:64; Mk 13:26 of heaven.” # Ps 110:1; Dn 7:13 # Ps 110:1; Dn 7:13
63Then the high priest #Mt 26:3 tore his robes #Lv 10:6|NoBook| 21:10Nm 14:6Jn 19:23 and said, “Why do we still need witnesses? #Heb 12:1 64You have heard the blasphemy! #Jn 10:33 Rv 13:6 What is your decision? ” # Lit How does it appear to you?
And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death. #Mk 10:33 65Then some began to spit on Him, to blindfold Him, and to beat Him, saying, “Prophesy! ” #Jn 11:51 The temple police #Jn 18:18 also took Him and slapped Him.
Peter Denies His Lord
66While #Mt 26:69-75Lk 22:54-62Jn 18:15-18 Peter #Lk 6:14 was in the courtyard below, one of the high priest’s servants came. 67When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with that Nazarene, #Mk 1:24|NoBook| 10:47|NoBook| 16:6Lk 4:34|NoBook| 24:19 Jesus.”
68But he denied it: “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about! ” Then he went out to the entryway, and a rooster crowed. # Other mss omit and a rooster crowed
69When the servant saw him again she began to tell those standing nearby, “This man is one of them! ”
70But again he denied it. After a little while those standing there said to Peter again, “You certainly are one of them, since you’re also a Galilean! ” # Other mss add and your speech shows it #Jn 4:45
71Then he started to curse # To call down curses on himself if what he said weren’t true and to swear with an oath, #Mt 5:34 “I don’t know this man you’re talking about! ”
72Immediately a rooster crowed a second time, #Mk 14:30 and Peter remembered when Jesus had spoken the word to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” When he thought about it, he began to weep. # Or he burst into tears, or he broke down
