Ezekiel 7

7
The Day of the Wrath of the Lord
1The word of the Lord came to me: 2“And you, #See ch. 2:1 O son of man, thus says the Lord God to the land of Israel: #Lam. 4:18; [Isa. 10:23]An end! The end has come upon the four corners of the land.#7:2 Or earth 3Now #[See ver. 2 above] the end is upon you, and #See ver. 8 I will send my anger upon you; #See ch. 18:30I will judge you according to your ways, and I will punish you for all your abominations. 4#See ch. 5:11 And my eye will not spare you, nor will I have pity, but #ch. 9:10; 11:21; 16:43; 22:31 I will punish you for your ways, while your abominations are in your midst. #See ch. 6:7Then you will know that I am the Lord.
5“Thus says the Lord God: Disaster #[ch. 5:9]after disaster!#7:5 Some Hebrew manuscripts (compare Syriac, Targum); most Hebrew manuscripts Disaster! A unique disaster! Behold, it comes. 6#[See ver. 2 above]An end has come; the end has come; it has awakened against you. Behold, it comes. 7#ver. 10 Your doom#7:7 The meaning of the Hebrew word is uncertain; also verse 10 has come to you, O inhabitant of the land. #Zeph. 1:14, 15; [ch. 12:23] The time has come; the day is near, a day of tumult, and not #[Jer. 25:30]of joyful shouting on the mountains. 8Now I will soon #ch. 9:8; 14:19; 20:8, 13, 21, 33, 34; 22:22; 36:18 pour out my wrath upon you, and #See ch. 5:13 spend my anger against you, #[See ver. 3 above]and judge you according to your ways, and I will punish you for all your abominations. 9#[See ver. 4 above] And my eye will not spare, nor will I have pity. I will punish you according to your ways, while your abominations are in your midst. #[ch. 6:7]Then you will know that I am the Lord, who strikes.
10 # [ver. 2] “Behold, the day! Behold, it comes! #ver. 7 Your doom has come; #[Isa. 10:5; 14:5]the rod has blossomed; pride has budded. 11#[ver. 23] Violence has grown up into #[See ver. 10 above] a rod of wickedness. #[ch. 17:13]None of them shall remain, nor their abundance, nor their wealth; neither shall there be preeminence among them.#7:11 The meaning of this last Hebrew sentence is uncertain 12#[See ver. 7 above] The time has come; the day has arrived. Let not #[Isa. 24:2; 1 Cor. 7:29, 30] the buyer rejoice, nor #[Isa. 24:2; 1 Cor. 7:29, 30] the seller mourn, #ver. 14for wrath is upon all their multitude.#7:12 Or abundance; also verses 13, 14 13For #Lev. 25:13, 14 the seller shall not return to what he has sold, while they live. #See ch. 9:8-10For the vision concerns all their multitude; it shall not turn back; and because of his iniquity, none can maintain his life.#7:13 The meaning of this last Hebrew sentence is uncertain
14“They have blown the trumpet and made everything ready, but none goes to battle, #ver. 12for my wrath is upon all their multitude. 15#[ch. 6:12; Lam. 1:20] The sword is without; pestilence and famine are within. #Jer. 14:18He who is in the field dies by the sword, #Jer. 14:18and him who is in the city famine and pestilence devour. 16#ch. 6:8 And if any survivors escape, they will be on the mountains, like #[Isa. 38:14]doves of the valleys, all of them moaning, each one over his iniquity. 17#ch. 21:7; Isa. 13:7; Jer. 6:24All hands are feeble, and all knees turn to water. 18#Isa. 15:2, 3; Lam. 2:10 They put on sackcloth, and #Ps. 55:5 horror covers them. Shame is on all faces, and #See Isa. 3:24baldness on all their heads. 19They cast their silver into the streets, and their gold is like an unclean thing. #Prov. 11:4; Zeph. 1:18 Their silver and gold are not able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the Lord. They cannot satisfy their hunger or fill their stomachs with it. #[1 Tim. 6:10] For it was #ch. 14:3, 4, 7; 44:12the stumbling block of their iniquity. 20#[Isa. 64:11] His beautiful ornament they used for pride, and #[ch. 16:17]; See ch. 8:5-16 they made their abominable images and their detestable things of it. Therefore #[ch. 9:7; 24:21; 25:3]I make it an unclean thing to them. 21And I will give it into the hands of #See ch. 28:7 foreigners for prey, #[ver. 24; ch. 23:46] and to the wicked of the earth for spoil, and #[See ver. 20 above]they shall profane it. 22I will turn my face from them, and #[See ver. 20 above]they shall profane my treasured#7:22 Or secret place. Robbers shall enter #[See ver. 20 above]and profane it.
23 # [Jer. 27:2] “Forge a chain!#7:23 Probably refers to an instrument of captivity #ch. 8:17; 9:9; 11:6; 22:3, 4; Jer. 6:7 For the land is full of bloody crimes #[ver. 11]and the city is full of violence. 24I will bring #[ver. 21; Hab. 1:6, 13] the worst of the nations to take possession of their houses. #[ver. 11] I will put an end to the pride of the strong, #See ver. 20and their holy places#7:24 By revocalization (compare Septuagint); Hebrew and those who sanctify them shall be profaned. 25#[ver. 2] When anguish comes, #[Jer. 6:14; 8:15; 1 Thess. 5:3]they will seek peace, but there shall be none. 26#[Jer. 4:20] Disaster comes upon disaster; #See Job 1:16-19 rumor follows rumor. #[ch. 20:1, 3; Ps. 74:9] They seek a vision from the prophet, while #[Mal. 2:7] the law#7:26 Or instruction perishes from the priest and #[1 Kgs. 12:6]counsel from the elders. 27The king mourns, the prince is wrapped in despair, and the hands of the people of the land are paralyzed by terror. According to their way #[ver. 4] I will do to them, and according to their judgments I will judge them, #See ch. 6:7and they shall know that I am the Lord.”
