Godlessness in the Last Days
1But understand this, that #See 1 Tim. 4:1in the last days there will come times of difficulty. 2For people will be #[Phil. 2:21] lovers of self, #Luke 16:14; [1 Tim. 6:10] lovers of money, #Rom. 1:30proud, #Rom. 1:30arrogant, abusive, #Rom. 1:30disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3#Rom. 1:31 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, #[Titus 1:8]not loving good, 4treacherous, reckless, #1 Tim. 3:6; 6:4 swollen with conceit, #Phil. 3:19lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5having the appearance of godliness, but #See 1 Tim. 5:8 denying its power. #1 Tim. 6:20; [Titus 1:14]Avoid such people. 6For among them are #[Titus 1:11]those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, 7always learning and never able to #1 Tim. 2:4arrive at a knowledge of the truth. 8Just as #Ex. 7:11 Jannes and Jambres #[Acts 13:8] opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, #See 1 Tim. 6:5 men corrupted in mind and #Titus 1:16disqualified regarding the faith. 9But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, #Ex. 7:12; 8:18; 9:11as was that of those two men.
All Scripture Is Breathed Out by God
10 # [Phil. 2:22] You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, 11my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me #Acts 13:14, 45, 50 at Antioch, #Acts 14:1, 2, 5 at Iconium, and #Acts 14:6, 19 at Lystra—which persecutions I endured; yet #Ps. 34:19 from them all #ch. 4:17; [2 Cor. 1:10]the Lord rescued me. 12Indeed, all who desire to #Titus 2:12 live a godly life in Christ Jesus #See Acts 14:22will be persecuted, 13while #[Rev. 22:11] evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and #Titus 3:3being deceived. 14But as for you, #[1 Tim. 4:6]continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom#3:14 The Greek for whom is plural you learned it 15and how #[Eph. 6:4]; See ch. 1:5 from childhood you have been acquainted with #[John 5:39] the sacred writings, #Ps. 119:99which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16#Rom. 15:4; 2 Pet. 1:20, 21All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17that #See 1 Tim. 6:11 the man of God#3:17 That is, a messenger of God (the phrase echoes a common Old Testament expression) may be complete, #[Luke 6:40] equipped #See ch. 2:21for every good work.
