BOOK FIVE: Psalms 107—150
Thanksgiving to the Lord for His Great Works of Deliverance
1Oh, #1 Chr. 16:34Ps. 106:1Jer. 33:11give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
For His mercy endures forever.
2Let the redeemed of the Lord say so,
Whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy,
3And #Is. 43:5Jer. 29:14Jer 31:8–10(Ezek. 39:2728)gathered out of the lands,
From the east and from the west,
From the north and from the south.
4They wandered in #Num. 14:33Nu 32:13(Deut. 2:7Nu 32:10)Josh. 5:6Jos 14:10the wilderness in a desolate way;
They found no city to dwell in.
5Hungry and thirsty,
Their soul fainted in them.
6#Ps. 50:15(Hos. 5:15)Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
And He delivered them out of their distresses.
7And He led them forth by the #Ezra 8:21Ps. 5:8Jer. 31:9right way,
That they might go to a city for a dwelling place.
8#Ps. 107:1521Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness,
And for His wonderful works to the children of men!
9For #(Ps. 34:10Luke 1:53)He satisfies the longing soul,
And fills the hungry soul with goodness.
10Those who #(Is. 42:7Mic. 7:8Luke 1:79)sat in darkness and in the shadow of death,
#Job 36:8Bound in affliction and irons—
11Because they #Lam. 3:42rebelled against the words of God,
And despised #(Ps. 73:24)the counsel of the Most High,
12Therefore He brought down their heart with labor;
They fell down, and there was #Ps. 22:11none to help.
13Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
And He saved them out of their distresses.
14#Ps. 68:6He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death,
And broke their chains in pieces.
15Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness,
And for His wonderful works to the children of men!
16For He has #Is. 45:1broken the gates of bronze,
And cut the bars of iron in two.
17Fools, #(Is. 65:6Jer. 30:1415)Lam. 3:39Ezek. 24:23because of their transgression,
And because of their iniquities, were afflicted.
18#Job 33:20Their soul abhorred all manner of food,
And they #Job 33:22drew near to the gates of death.
19Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
And He saved them out of their distresses.
20#Matt. 8:8He sent His word and #2 Kin. 20:5Ps. 30:2healed them,
And #Job 33:2830delivered them from their destructions.
21Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness,
And for His wonderful works to the children of men!
22#Lev. 7:12Ps. 50:14Heb. 13:15Let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving,
And #Ps. 9:11declare His works with rejoicing.
23Those who go down to the sea in ships,
Who do business on great waters,
24They see the works of the Lord,
And His wonders in the deep.
25For He commands and #Jon. 1:4raises the stormy wind,
Which lifts up the waves of the sea.
26They mount up to the heavens,
They go down again to the depths;
#Ps. 22:14Their soul melts because of trouble.
27They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man,
And are at their wits’ end.
28Then they cry out to the Lord in their trouble,
And He brings them out of their distresses.
29#Ps. 89:9Matt. 8:26Luke 8:24He calms the storm,
So that its waves are still.
30Then they are glad because they are quiet;
So He guides them to their desired haven.
31#Ps. 107:81521Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness,
And for His wonderful works to the children of men!
32Let them exalt Him also #Ps. 22:2225in the assembly of the people,
And praise Him in the company of the elders.
33He #1 Kin. 17:1Is. 50:2turns rivers into a wilderness,
And the watersprings into dry ground;
34A #Gen. 13:10Deut. 29:23fruitful land into barrenness,
For the wickedness of those who dwell in it.
35#Ps. 114:8(Is. 41:1718)He turns a wilderness into pools of water,
And dry land into watersprings.
36There He makes the hungry dwell,
That they may establish a city for a dwelling place,
37And sow fields and plant vineyards,
That they may yield a fruitful harvest.
38#Gen. 12:2Ge 17:1620He also blesses them, and they multiply greatly;
And He does not let their cattle #Ex. 1:7(Deut. 7:14)decrease.
39When they are #2 Kin. 10:32diminished and brought low
Through oppression, affliction, and sorrow,
40#Job 12:2124He pours contempt on princes,
And causes them to wander in the wilderness where there is no way;
41#1 Sam. 2:8(Ps. 113:7Yet He sets the poor on high, far from affliction,
And #Ps. 78:52makes their families like a flock.
42#Job 5:1516The righteous see it and rejoice,
And all #Job 5:16Ps. 63:11(Rom. 3:19)iniquity stops its mouth.
43#Ps. 64:9Jer. 9:12(Hos. 14:9)Whoever is wise will observe these things,
And they will understand the lovingkindness of the Lord.
