Neboť víme, že Zákon je duchovní, já však jsem tělesný, prodaný do otroctví hříchu. Nerozumím tomu, co dělám; vždyť nedělám to, co chci, nýbrž činím to, co nenávidím. Činímli však to, co nechci, souhlasím se Zákonem, že je dobrý. Ale pak již to nekonám já sám, nýbrž hřích, který ve mně přebývá. Vím totiž, že ve mně, to jest v mém těle, nepřebývá dobré; neboť chtít dobro dokážu, ale konat už ne. Vždyť nečiním dobro, které chci, nýbrž zlo, které nechci. Jestliže však činím to, co nechci, nedělám to již já, ale hřích, který ve mně přebývá.
