GOD IS OUR SOURCE OF LOVE WHEN LOVING FEELS IMPOSSIBLE

There is not one family not facing some conflict at one time or another. Sometimes these matters can easily be resolved. At other times, it can be really tough! Loving difficult family members often exposes our hearts. What is usually your response to such incidents?

When patience runs thin and emotions rise, it becomes clear whether we are drawing from God or relying on ourselves to solve the problem. Scripture reminds us that love does not originate in human effort, but in God Himself: We love Him because He first loved us. (1 John 4:19).

When our relationship with God is neglected, our capacity to love is influenced. We need the Lord to help us love them!

Romans 5:5 tells us that the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit. This verse reveals that love is not something we can manufacture under pressure, but something God pours into us as we remain close to Him despite challenges. When prayer becomes inconsistent and time in God's Word decreases, we become irritated, want to withdraw, or render a harsh response, often especially towards those closest to us.

Jesus sets the standard for love in John 15:12 when He says, This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Jesus loved from a place of continual fellowship with the Father. His love was not reactive or emotional, but obedient and sacrificial. In the same way, our ability to love difficult family members flows directly from our intimacy with God.

Challenging family relationships are opportunities to deepen our dependence on God. Rather than trying harder to love, He invites us to come closer to Him. Once our hearts are anchored in God, His supernatural ability to love becomes an overflow of relationship rather than an emotional struggle.

Pause and reflect

In moments of family tension, what does your response reveal about your closeness to God?

Practical application

Before engaging in difficult family interactions, e.g., a birthday, family reunion, etc., spend time in prayer asking God to fill your heart with His love.

Prayer

Lord, draw me into deeper intimacy with You. Pour Your love into my heart by Your Holy Spirit. Teach me to love my family from the overflow of my relationship with You, not from my emotions or strength. I pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
