The Crossroads of Salvation

1. Two meals

That evening, the Passover meal met the Lord's supper. The ancient Passover meal, rooted in the Exodus, looked backward to the Jews' deliverance from Slavery, yet did not set them free from their sin. On the eve of His crucifixion, Jesus instituted a new meal, the Lord's supper, which announced rescue from sin and death. At this point, the shadow met its substance, the picture met its reality, and redemption moved from national to universal. The memory of what God did was turned into a mission of participating in what Christ has done. In that moment, God revealed that salvation is not merely escape from oppression, but it is God transforming the whole person.

Prayer: Dear God, even today, help us to look back to the finished work of Christ at Calvary with gratitude because there our sins were paid for. Enable us look forward to what He has secured for us, Amen.
