Two Sides of Humility: Service and Teachability

In the world of leadership, it’s tempting to chase the next title or trophy—a bigger office, a louder applause, recognition that feels like oxygen to our egos. The world screams, “Climb the ladder.” But Jesus commands us to “carry a towel.” This reveals the first side of powerful humility: servant leadership. True leaders aren’t the ones sitting at the head of the table; they are the ones who set the table for others. When leaders choose the “dirty work” without fanfare—like the CEO who quietly picks up trash from the office floor—they send a clear message: “No job is beneath me, because no person is beneath me.

The Brave Truth: True impact comes from service not titles.

The second, equally critical side of humility is teachability. A leader’s growth is directly proportional to their willingness to learn. Pride convinces you that your cup of knowledge is full, leaving no room for new ideas, constructive feedback, or God’s wisdom. A proud heart is a closed-off heart. But God doesn’t pour His grace into cups that are already full. He looks for the humble—the ones who show up with an empty cup, ready to be filled. This posture of teachability is a magnet for divine guidance and innovation. A truly humble leader holds their opinions loosely, ready for God or a wise counselor to show them a better way.

These two traits—service and teachability—are the twin engines of a leader who lasts. Are you willing to serve in the unseen places and remain open to being taught?

Action Steps:

  1. Serve in Secret: This week, find a task at work or home that others avoid. Do it without seeking recognition.
  2. Empty Your Cup: Ask a trusted colleague or family member, "What's one area where I could be more teachable?" Listen without defending yourself.
  3. Combine Both: Find a way to serve someone by using your skills to teach or mentor them, putting their growth ahead of your own status.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Which side of humility is more challenging for you: serving others or being teachable? Why?
  2. When was the last time you embraced a "lowly" task to serve someone else?
  3. How can you create more "empty cup" moments in your week to receive wisdom from God and others?

Kill Your Pride: An 8-Day Brave Coaches Journey

Pride is the quiet enemy of every leader. It convinces us our view is the only view and our strength is all we need. But, God opposes the proud and gives grace to the humble. This devotional is for those who want to trade the fleeting satisfaction of ego for the lasting strength of humility. Join us as we explore what it means to lead with a servant's heart, remain teachable, and build a life founded on God's greatness, not our own. Thank you to Derek England for creating and submitting this plan.
