Our Living Hope in a Living Stone

When darkness veils his lovely face
I rest on His unchanging grace
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil

On Christ the solid rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand.

Peter uses the image of a stone to help his hearers comprehend what Jesus offers them. But this stone is not dead and lifeless! Once again Peter reinforces that there is a living hope – this time it is a living stone! This living stone is chosen and precious (v6), a cornerstone that holds everything together. While some have rejected him and stumbled (v8), those who believe are found to be just like Jesus, living stones too! We are stones that are being built into a spiritual house. Peter paints a vision of our identity as chosen, holy and God’s special possession. We build on a firm foundation.
